Born Michael Bokeem Woodbine on April 13, 1973 in Harlem, New York, Woodbine attended Sarah J. Hale High School before receiving a scholarship to North Carolina School of the Arts in the United States. He was accepted by the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University and graduated in 1995.
He began his acting career in 1995, making his television debut on the ABC soap opera One Life to Live, and going on to appear in shows such as ER and Law & Order. He won a recurring role as Mike Giardello in the drama series Homicide: Life on the Street.
